India has added a large number of MBBS and postgraduate medical seats over the last decade to meet the increasing demand for medical education. From 2014 to 2025, the number of MBBS seats has increased by 130% and the number of PG seats has increased by 138.3%.

The ministry’s data published last year showed that Tamil Nadu had the highest number of government medical colleges at 38, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The government told Parliament that it has approved 75 projects under the PMSSY’s “Upgradation of Government Medical Colleges by Construction of Super Specialty Blocks” scheme and completed 71 of them. It also informed that 19 of the 22 new AIIMS have already started undergraduate medical courses.
The AYUSH ministry said in March that, based on data from the National Medical Commission (NMC), India has 13,86,150 registered allopathic doctors and 7,51,768 registered AYUSH practitioners. It is estimated that if 80% of these doctors are available for service, then the doctor-to-population ratio in the country is about 1:11.
