Foreign medical graduates (FMGs) in Uttar Pradesh have appealed to the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council to hold independent counselling sessions only for local candidates and not mix these with sessions for non-local candidates. The Doctors Welfare Federation of India (DWF) has raised the issue in a formal letter to the registrar of the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council, pointing out the negative impact of the current common counselling process on local students.
DWF pointed out that the current system allows non-resident candidates to compete on a level playing field with local students for medical seats in Uttar Pradesh. Such increased competition has made it even more challenging for local candidates to get admission into their preferred institutes, as many local candidates with high scores lose the opportunity due to non-resident candidates joining the race.
DWF Advocates for Prioritizing Domicile Students
Citing practices of other states, DWF pointed out that some states give preference to native candidates at the time of FMGE counselling to provide equal opportunities to local students. The association requested the Uttar Pradesh government to do the same and suggested holding separate counselling sessions for local and non-local candidates.
DWF stressed that implementing this change will help deserving local students gain educational opportunities in their home state. They urged the authorities to take immediate action and emphasized the need to ensure fairness and equity in the medical admission process.
