New Delhi: ICSI President CS Dhananjay Shukla spoke on the growing popularity of the company secretary profession, its future and how students can succeed in this career. He commented on placements, scholarships, internships, technological innovations, doctoral opportunities and the changing roles of company secretaries in contemporary companies.
Why Choose a Career as a Company Secretary?
Company secretaries are key professionals in corporate governance. They maintain legal compliance, advise the board on regulatory issues, and assist businesses in complying with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles. Their advisory function is indispensable in dealing with complex legal and corporate requirements. For example, setting up a manufacturing firm in Haryana requires compliance with about 48 laws, where company secretaries provide strategic advice and information.
Challenging but Rewarding CS Exams
The CS course is challenging, but students with dedication and focus can clear it successfully. The Company Secretary Executive Entrance Tests (CSEET) are conducted four times a year, while the Executive and Professional Programme exams are held twice a year, in June and December.
Tips for Students:
- Study regularly for 6–7 hours a day.
- Use ICSI’s updated study materials and magazines like Student CS for preparation.
- Stay informed about the latest trends in governance and compliance.
AI as a Tool for Company Secretaries
Shukla emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is a valuable tool for simplifying tasks but cannot replace the human judgment required in the advisory role of a company secretary. AI supports professionals but will not eliminate their relevance.
Placement Opportunities and Salaries
ICSI has a dedicated placement portal and organizes placement drives across its regional and chapter offices. Freshers in this profession can earn ₹60,000–70,000 per month, while experienced professionals can command salaries worth crores annually.
International Recognition and Global Collaborations
ICSI has established international centers in countries like Australia, Canada, and the UAE to promote global collaboration. Its programmes are recognized as equivalent to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the UK and UAE. The institute also has partnerships with several global organizations, enabling professional exchanges and training opportunities.
Affordable Fee Structure and Scholarships
ICSI ensures accessibility for students from tier-3 and tier-4 cities. The CSEET registration fee is ₹2,000, while the CS Executive Programme costs ₹18,400 (₹23,400 via the graduation route). Scholarships are available for eligible candidates to support their education.
Comprehensive Learning Support
Shukla stated that ICSI’s study materials are well-designed to help students succeed without private coaching. Additionally, the institute offers free centralized online classes, plans to launch a digital library, and encourages participation in social clubs to develop essential skills.
Doctoral Programmes and Emerging Fields
With the UGC recognizing the CS qualification as equivalent to a master’s degree, students can pursue PhDs or appear for the NET exam. Emerging fields such as ESG compliance and maritime law also present exciting opportunities for company secretaries to explore.
Bright Future for CS Professionals
India’s economy, growing at 6.5%, is expected to drive significant demand for company secretaries. By 2047, an additional one lakh professionals will be required to meet the corporate sector’s needs, highlighting the immense growth potential in this career path.
A career as a company secretary offers rewarding opportunities for students passionate about law, business, and corporate governance.
