A video showing a giant crocodile roaming on the lakeside road at IIT Bombay’s Powai campus has become a matter of concern. An animal rescuer said that the crocodile, suspected to have come out of Powai Lake, was seen resting on a nearby road late Sunday evening (March 23, 2025).
Rescuers said crocodiles do not often come out of the lake water and usually stay away from human settlements, making the incident extremely rare.
Pawan Sharma, honorary wildlife warden and founder president of RAWW (ResQueen’s Association for Wildlife Welfare), suggested that it could be a female crocodile looking for a nest to lay eggs.
Residents and officials ensured the safety of the crocodile, and reportedly, it eventually returned to its natural habitat in the lake.
At the same time, the Mumbai range of the Thane territorial wing is also keeping a strict vigil. Officials have asked people to remain calm, alert and stay away from places where crocodiles are likely to be found.
