KOTTAYAM: Kerala Higher Education Minister R. Bindu announced on Saturday that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted Category-I Graded Autonomy to Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), the highest level of autonomy available to universities.
In a Facebook post, Bindu highlighted that the UGC made this decision during its 588th meeting on March 13, 2025, recognizing the university’s excellence in global rankings and its A++ accreditation in the NAAC re-accreditation.
She emphasized that MGU achieved a CGPA of 3.61 in the fourth cycle of NAAC re-accreditation and consistently ranked in the 400-500 band in the Times Higher Education rankings for three consecutive years.
“With this recognition, MG University has become the first institution in Kerala to attain Category-I Graded Autonomy, securing its place among the top universities in the country,” Bindu stated.
This autonomy empowers the university to design and implement innovative curricula and programs, establish study centres and constituent colleges, forge academic linkages and set up science parks, aligning with Clause 4 of the Graded Autonomy Regulations, 2018.
Bindu also noted that a key advantage of this status is that the university can now offer distance education programs without requiring prior UGC approval.
Mahatma Gandhi University, a state-owned public university headquartered in Kottayam, continues to uphold its reputation as one of Kerala’s premier higher education institutions.
