In a major change in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), Goa schools officially began the new academic year in April instead of the traditional June schedule. The education department reported that nearly 80% of students welcomed the early start, while some expressed concerns about the heat.
On Monday, schools across the coastal state reopened for students from classes 6 to 12, recording a 90% attendance rate while some institutions recorded full attendance.
State education secretary Prasad Lolienkar visited several schools in Panaji to monitor student response and attendance. “Students have returned to school with enthusiasm. Most of them appreciated the early start, though some mentioned inconvenience due to the weather,” Lolienkar said.
The government advanced the academic calendar as part of its strategic implementation of the NEP, which aims to enhance educational outcomes and make better use of the academic cycle. Goa currently has 2,153 schools operating from classes 5 to 12.
During the interaction, students also requested better sports infrastructure and school-level coaching facilities, underlining the growing demand for a balanced academic and extracurricular environment.
The state education department continues to collect feedback to ensure a smooth transition to the revised academic structure and meet the changing needs of students.
