Understanding the Counselling Rounds What Happens When?

Rounds 1 to 4: Regular Allotment

These are the core rounds where the bulk of seat allotment takes place. Each round involves choice filling, seat allotment based on merit and preferences, and payment of seat confirmation fees.

    • Round 1 is the most critical it is the only round where fresh registration is accepted. Candidates who miss Round 1 registration cannot participate in Rounds 2, 3, or 4.
    • Rounds 2 and 3 allow candidates to modify their college and branch preferences, but the scope narrows with each round.
    • Round 3 is the absolute last opportunity to change choices. After Round 3 locking, all choices are treated as final and will be used for internal sliding as well.
    • Round 4 operates on auto-freeze, meaning no manual willingness input is required or accepted. Every candidate is automatically frozen to their Round 4 allotment.

    Round 5: Internal Sliding

Round 5 is exclusively for candidates who have already physically reported to their allotted institution. It gives them a chance to upgrade to a better college or branch if seats remain vacant after Round 4. Participation is voluntary and done through online willingness submission.

Rounds 6 and 7: Special Rounds

Special Rounds are conducted after the regular rounds to fill remaining vacant seats. These rounds are open to:

    • JEE Mains 2026 qualified candidates
    • CUET (UG) 2026 qualified candidates
    • 10+2 passouts (UP board or UP domicile)

A key difference in Special Rounds is that the ₹20,000 fee is non-refundable for all categories, including SC/ST candidates who otherwise pay ₹12,000 in regular rounds. Candidates who had a seat allotted earlier but withdrew may not be allowed to re-register, depending on specific conditions laid out by UPTAC.

    Seat Confirmation Fee Structure

    CategoryRegular Rounds (1-4)Special Rounds (6-7)
    General / OBC₹20,000₹20,000 (non-refundable)
    SC / ST / Concession Categories₹12,000₹20,000 (non-refundable)

What Is Freeze, Float and Withdrawal?

After each round of seat allotment, candidates are required to express their willingness online. Here is what each option means:

    • Freeze – You are satisfied with the allotted seat and wish to confirm it. No further upgrades will be considered.
    • Float – You accept the current allotment but want to be considered for a better option in the next round, based on your filled choices.
    • Withdrawal – You wish to exit the counselling process entirely and forfeit your seat. This is irreversible.

Choosing the right option at each stage is critical. Candidates who select Freeze and then report physically are considered for internal sliding in Round 5.

    Physical Reporting

Once a seat is confirmed, candidates must physically report to their allotted institution within the specified dates. Carrying original documents is mandatory at the time of reporting.

Failure to report physically will result in automatic seat cancellation with no refund of the seat confirmation fee. This rule applies across all rounds, including Special Rounds.

Candidates reporting in Round 4 or Round 5 should also keep their original documents ready well in advance to avoid last-minute delays.

Documents Required for UPTAC 2026 Counselling

While the official document checklist will be published on the UPTAC portal, candidates are generally required to carry the following:
