In a big move towards gender equality, Delhi University (DU) has announced a special benefit for families with only one daughter. Starting from the 2025–26 academic session DU will reserve one extra seat in every postgraduate (PG) course for female students who are the only girl child in their family.
What’s the New Policy?
This new reservation will apply to all 77 PG programs offered at DU. It’s meant to give more opportunities to girls from small families often raised by single parents or in households with limited resources.
The policy is based on the success of the same scheme at the undergraduate (UG) level where it was introduced in the 2023–24 academic year. Last year alone 849 UG students got admission through the Single Girl Child (SGC) quota, up from 764 the year before.
How Will Admissions Work?
- Entrance Exam: Students must take the CUET-PG 2025 exam.
- Seat Allocation: Seats will be filled through DU’s Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS).
- Application Timeline: PG registrations usually open around May–June every year.
This move gives only-girl-child candidates an extra chance to secure a PG seat, especially useful for those who already got a UG seat at DU and want to continue their studies.
Why This Matters
This policy helps reduce the gender gap in higher education and supports families raising only one daughter. It’s a step forward in making advanced education more accessible and inclusive.
Delhi University also plans to track how many students benefit from this new quota and how it impacts their academic journey. If the results are positive it may inspire other universities to adopt similar initiatives.
