New Delhi: The Delhi University (DU) will start admissions at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh from this academic session, marking a major milestone in the expansion of the university after nearly thirty years.
An official statement issued by the university said that Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh made this announcement during the 92nd Annual Court Meeting of DU on Friday. Located just five minutes away from DU’s West Campus, the newly built Veer Savarkar College is spread over a built-up area of ​​18,816.56 square meters and has an estimated cost of Rs 140 crore to develop it.
To meet the growing demand for higher education in Delhi, DU is expanding the new college with 24 classrooms, eight tutorial rooms, 40 faculty rooms, a departmental library, a conference room and a canteen, the statement said.
DU is building two new campuses along with Veer Savarkar College at Surajmal Vihar and Dwarka Sector 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for these on January 3, 2025.
DU is expanding to ease the pressure on existing colleges and provide students with better access to academic resources. For the 2024-25 session, 2,46,194 students applied for 79 undergraduate programmes in 69 colleges.
Skill-based courses are becoming popular among DU students
The total number of course preferences offered was 1,72,18,187, and 70,422 students successfully gained admission. DU is also introducing several new academic programmes, including MTech in Computer Science, BA (Hons) in Russian, DM in Geriatric Mental Health, DM in Pulmonary Medicine and MSc in Psychiatry (Mental Health).
Skill-based education is becoming increasingly popular among DU students, with “Personality Development and Communication” becoming the most popular Skill Enhancement Course (SEC), opted by 38,642 students.
DU saw high enrolments in courses such as political leadership and communication (36,193 students), digital marketing (35,370 students) and communication in everyday life (31,185 students). Among value-added courses, digital empowerment had the highest number of students (69,457), followed by financial literacy (54,401) constitutional values ​​and the art of being happy (37,244).
VC Singh said DU appointed 4,784 new teachers and promoted 7,423 faculty members in the last three-and-a-half years. The university is spending Rs 1,838.41 crore on new academic buildings, research centres and student amenities.
With admissions starting at Veer Savarkar College and new campuses coming up, DU is expanding to provide better education across Delhi.
