New Delhi: The Directorate of Education has directed private schools in Delhi to provide free uniforms, books and writing materials to students from economically weaker sections, disadvantaged groups and those with special needs.
The directive has been issued following complaints from parents and stakeholders who pointed out that many private unaided schools failed to supply these essential items and instead demanded money in violation of rules.
As per Rule 8 of the Delhi Right to Education Rules, 2011 and a Directorate of Education (DoE) notification dated December 30, 2013, all private unaided recognised schools must provide free books, uniforms and writing materials to students enrolled under EWS, DG and CWSN categories in line with the Right to Education Act, 2009.
District Directors to Prevent Schools from Demanding Money from Students
The Directorate of Education has warned that schools not complying with this directive will face action under the Delhi School Education Act and Rules, 1973 and the Right to Education Act. It has directed the District Education Directors to enforce compliance and take appropriate action on complaints. The Directorate of Education has also directed them to ensure that students of these categories get books, uniforms and writing materials without charge.
