A 17-year-old medical student allegedly hanged himself with an iron rod in his hostel room in Kota’s Jawahar Nagar area on Tuesday, police said. This is the ninth suspected suicide by a coaching student in Kota since January. Harshraj Shankar, a resident of Bihar’s Nalanda district, had been preparing for medical entrance exams at a coaching institute since April last year.
Jawahar Nagar SHO Ram Laxman said the hostel caretaker informed them in the afternoon that the boy was locking his door from inside and was not responding. A police team immediately reached the spot, broke the door and found the boy hanging from an iron rod. Police found that “suicide prevention devices” were installed on ceiling fans in the hostel, so the NEET aspirant used an iron rod to hang himself.
The SHO said that the police did not find any suicide note at the spot. They have kept the body in the hospital mortuary, and the post-mortem will be conducted after the parents arrive. Officials are investigating the matter. This is the ninth student suicide case this year in Kota, known as a coaching hub. In January alone, six coaching students – five JEE and one NEET aspirant – took their own lives. The number of student suicides in Kota reached 17 in 2024 and 26 in 2023.
