NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) plans to introduce a new system of two Class X board exams in a year, as the Times of India reported. This new two-exam system will give students the flexibility to choose the exam schedule that best fits their individual needs and academic preparation. The board exam is likely to happen in February and May.

Currently, the CBSE Board schedules Class 10 exams so students don’t have exams for two subjects on the same day. This results in a month-long exam period, with breaks of three to even ten days between each exam. For example, this year the Class 10 exams started on February 15 and will run until March 18.

According to the Times of India, the draft will be available for public feedback soon. It includes a proposal that will allow candidates to appear for both exams and choose the subjects they would like to take.

According to the Times of India, the board is finalizing plans to implement this new schedule starting in 2026. The Marksheet will show the highest score from the two exams. The CBSE Board exam schedule will be more compact with shorter gaps between tests.

Why double board exam

The CBSE plans to introduce this new double board exam system to ease the burden on students. It will help students in many ways.

  • The exam schedule will be more efficient, with shorter intervals and minimum breaks, to speed up the process and reduce wait times.
  • Students can choose to appear for one or both exams and select the subjects they want to attempt.
  • The final mark sheet will show the highest score from the two exams, ensuring students receive credit for their best performance.
  • Starting in the 2026-27 session, subjects such as Maths and Science will be offered in both, basic and standard difficulty levels.
  • The CBSE Board plans this change to attract a wider range of students, allowing them to engage with the curriculum at a level that best matches their skills and knowledge.
