The Department of Science and Technology (DST) supports young talent in India through the INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) scheme.
A recent Parliament report shows that thousands of students received scholarships under this scheme in the 2024-25 academic year. The program encourages students to build careers in science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and veterinary.
Encouraging Young Minds in Science from School to Research
The INSPIRE scheme helps bright students pursue careers in science and strengthens research and development in India. It works through four main programmes:
- INSPIRE Internship – Introduces the top 1% of Class X students to science through special camps, sparking early interest in research.
- Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) – Awards 12,000 scholarships yearly to students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in basic and natural sciences. Each student receives ₹80,000 per year.
- INSPIRE Fellowship – Supports top M.Sc. graduates and INSPIRE Scholars doing Ph.D. programs, providing up to ₹42,000 per month.
- INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship – Helps post-doctoral researchers with up to 150 fellowships annually, offering ₹1.25 lakh per month and research funding.
